The Great Crypto Heist: Unraveling the LuBian Mining Pool Hack

LuBian Hacked for a Record-Breaking $3.5 Billion in Bitcoin

Back in 2020, the Chinese mining pool LuBian experienced a devastating blow when hackers made off with a staggering 127,426 Bitcoin (BTC). At that point, the loot was price about $3.5 billion, marking it as the biggest crypto hack ever recorded, in accordance with insights from blockchain analytics firm Arkham Intelligence.

Unveiling the Heist: Arkham Intelligence’s Discovery

In a retrospective investigation, Arkham Intelligence unearthed this massive heist only recently. They revealed that LuBian, which had been the sixth-largest BTC mining pool, initially fell victim to the attack on December 28, 2020. The hackers managed to swipe about 90% of the pool’s Bitcoin before LuBian could secure the remaining 11,886 BTC in recovery wallets. Interestingly, each the mining pool and the perpetrators kept the incident under wraps on the time.

A Vulnerability Exploited: The Role of Weak Key Generation

Adding a layer of intrigue, LuBian encoded an OP_RETURN message into each wallet address related to the hacker, leading to 1,516 messages and costing the pool around 1.4 BTC. Arkham speculated that LuBian’s private key generation algorithm, vulnerable to brute-force attacks, was the chink within the armor that the hackers exploited.

With today’s market prices, the stolen Bitcoin is now valued at roughly $14.5 billion. This cyber heist serves as a stark reminder of the critical importance of strong security practices, including using robust random number generators for personal key management.
