AI and Web3 Gaming Revolution Unveiled by Delabs Games

The Future of Web3 Gaming and AI: Insights from Delabs Games’ New Co-CEO JC Kim

Artificial intelligence (AI) has been making waves across various industries, and the realm of Web3 gaming is no exception. With the appointment of JC Kim as the new co-CEO of Delabs Games, a fresh perspective is being shared about the future intertwining of AI and Web3 technologies. In an insightful discussion with Blockzeit, Kim outlined how this fusion could reshape the landscape of game development by significantly reducing time, cost, and required human resources.

The rapid adoption of AI has catalyzed transformative changes in the gaming industry. As Kim, also a co-founder of Verse8, elaborates, AI is not just a tool but a game-changer that accelerates development, cuts expenses, and lowers entry barriers for creators. Delabs Games, supported by 4:33 Creative Lab, has partnered with Verse8, an AI-native game creation platform from Planetarium Labs. This collaboration aims to empower indie and young developers by providing them with a streamlined game creation engine.

Current State of Game Development

According to Kim, the development of casual games typically involves teams of 10 to 20 people, whereas mid-core games require 40 to 60 developers. For AAA games, these figures can soar to over a hundred developers working for more than three years. Kim cites the example of Genshin Impact—a game that now boasts over 100 million players and generates more than $5 billion annually. Despite initial criticisms for its similarities to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, this cross-platform game took over 500 people and $100 million in budget to develop over three and a half years. In contrast, Night Crows, a mobile Web3 game, achieved revenue exceeding $500 million with a team of over 100 people in just two years.

The stakes are high in AAA game development due to its high-risk, low-success rate nature. Kim points to the top 20 games on Steam as evidence, noting the rarity of new titles making a significant impact. Mid-core games face their own challenges, often struggling to compete with more established franchises.

Convergence of AI and Web3 Gaming

Delabs Games and Verse8 are set on leveraging AI to advance mid-core and casual game development, with Kim estimating a potential reduction in workforce and production time. A mid-core premium game, traditionally requiring 50 people and two years, could be developed by just five people in two months with AI’s aid. The technology promises to revolutionize coding, design, and graphics across Web3 game client/server structures.

Kim also highlights that simpler game genres like defense, sports, or Rogue-Lite titles can be developed in under a month, thanks to AI. This innovation democratizes game creation, allowing even those without coding or animation skills to bring their visions to life. While AI will mostly benefit mid-core and casual games, its impact on AAA development is expected to be gradual.

Crypto, AI Game Makers, and IP Synergy

The next wave of Web3 gaming is set to increase demand for cryptocurrencies due to their real-time transactions and minimal fees, making them more attractive than traditional fiat currencies. Kim underscores how AI can harness existing IP assets or generate new ones with minimal effort, simplifying the coding process and enabling developers to introduce updates rapidly to keep games engaging.

Moreover, AI facilitates the tokenization of IP assets, allowing them to be traded in NFT or crypto marketplaces. This not only enhances revenue streams for creators but also provides users with alternative trading avenues. These advancements are just the beginning, and Kim foresees countless possibilities on the horizon.
