Terry Gilliam’s Artistic Leap into the NFT World
A Legendary Director’s New Venture
Famed director Terry Gilliam, known for his work on iconic movies equivalent to “Brazil,” “12 Monkeys,” and the cult classic “Monty Python and the Holy Grail,” is branching out into recent territory by releasing his first NFT, titled “Blessed Before Blast.” This NFT is inspired by a surrealist print that is been hanging around his home for the past 50 years.
A Nod to His Artistic Beginnings
Gilliam, who was once an illustrator and animator, has drawn this piece himself. It’s a throwback to his early days within the art world. Teaming up with Decrypt Studios for this enterprise, he’s tapping into his roots to create something truly unique. (Just so you already know, Decrypt Studios operates independently from Decrypt’s editorial side.)
Monty Python’s Influence
The piece draws inspiration from the unique “Monty Python” animations. Gilliam’s time on “Monty Python’s Flying Circus” within the Nineteen Seventies is what really cemented his status as a surrealist artist.

What Exactly is This NFT About?
For those not within the know, an NFT is a blockchain-based token that proves ownership of a digital item, like art. Gilliam’s NFT presents an angel in space, precariously perched on a bomb that symbolizes Earth. In this animated piece, the angel’s attempts to flee the upcoming explosion are futile.
The Deeper Meaning
This NFT is described as a “visual representation of the nervousness the artist feels as we march toward a very different and less pleasant planet,” as per Decrypt Studios. The original print was photographed after which animated to create this piece, which is now available for auction.
Gilliam’s Thoughts on NFTs
Gilliam expresses his excitement about sharing his art with the world through NFTs, admitting that much of his artwork has never left the confines of his home. However, he candidly admits he has “no fucking idea!” whether NFTs are the longer term of art but is desirous to explore this recent decentralized art realm.
Auction Details
The NFT “Blessed Before Blast” is being auctioned on the Ethereum-based marketplace OpenSea. The bidding began on a Monday afternoon and can proceed until November 29.
Not Alone within the NFT Space
Gilliam is not the primary director to delve into NFTs. Recently, Quentin Tarantino revealed plans to auction uncut scenes from “Pulp Fiction” as NFTs, despite facing legal motion from Miramax. Similarly, “Kung Fury” director David Sanberg launched NFT characters inspired by his film on the Ethereum blockchain last month.
